Ring Always Home Cam, an autonomous security drone for indoor use

Security cameras are useful tools for home protection, but they are expensive, and, for good coverage, more than one may be needed. Amazon‘s subsidiary Ring presented some new stuff intended to secure and monitor our homes. One of the more spectacular things they showed off was the Always Home Cam, a drone that can move autonomously around the house, allowing multiple viewing angles with a single device, and that returns to its base alone to recharge.

The idea behind the drone is that it should be able to monitor large parts of a household or other premises without the owner having to set up a surveillance camera in each room. This autonomous indoor security camera flies your chosen, personalized paths so that you can easily check in on your home for peace of mind.

You can create a map of the residence, which allows you to define which point of view of each area the drone should capture. After configuration, it is possible to make the camera fly when requested, or automatically when the Ring Alarm system detects some type of unusual disturbance.

You can easily stream video while the camera is in-flight via the Ring App, making sure that you’re in the know when it comes to everything happening at home. When the drone has finished its inspection, it flies back to its charging station and charges its batteries for the next journey.

As its creators emphasize, privacy and security are fundamental to their products. Therefore, when the device is not working, it is installed on its base, and the camera is locked. The camera only starts recording when the device leaves the base and starts flying. Always Home Cam also produces the sound of a certain level so that it can be perceived when it moves and records.

The routes are strictly defined by the user – there is no possibility of direct manual remote control. The system also has collision avoidance technology that allows the Always Home Cam to avoid unexpected objects as it moves on the pre-set paths, and its small size, lightweight design, and shrouded propellers enable it to move safely throughout the home.

Ring Always Home Cam will be released on the market next year and will cost $250.
