An electric scooter or electric bike is typical in this era of technology, but transportation is the most prevalent problem. They can be challenging to store or carry when you are not using them.
Fortunately, the makers of a new minimalist electric scooter, “hoverboard,” come up with a solution in the form of a clever folding design. They named this project ‘UrmO’.
It started with the scooter two-and-half years ago in a garage in Germany. Later, four generations of the prototype were built. 10 people were included in this team from renowned brands like Tesla, BMW, and Rimac, makers of the world’s first all-electric hypercar.

The Urmo self-balancing electric scooter can deliver a top speed of 9 miles per hour, with a range of 12 miles.
While designing the UrmO, a team has emphasized more on convenience. Apart from using premium materials, they also designed the large 14-inch wheels that are incapable of getting flat tires and the innovative folding mechanism. It weighs only 6.4kg/14 pounds.
Steering is achieved either by leaning or using an optional handlebar.
How does it work?
The folding mechanism is the most highlighted feature of the Urmo. Merely by lifting the handle, it folds up automatically. This patent-pending mechanism is both simple and functional at the same time.
The ingenuity is that the kinematics of the joints are designed in a way that there is no need for a locking mechanism when the vehicle is unfolded.
To eliminate tolerances, a team has reduced the number of joints to a minimum and used premium materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum. Two linkages underneath the vehicle assure the wheels are fixed upright when driving.
