MediaTek’s Dimensity 820 SoC will make dual-SIM 5G phones widely available

MediaTek continues to renew its portfolio of 5G processors. The Taiwanese company has just launched the MediaTek Dimensity 820, a new system-on-chip (SoC) that delivers ultra-fast 5G speeds, dual-SIM tech, and voice over new radio (VoNR), the 5G equivalent to VoLTE tech.

The SoC, manufactured on a 7-nanometer node, offers four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.6 GHz within its octa-core CPU. Besides, it includes a Mali-G57 MC5 GPU for graphics, a 5G modem that accurately supports operation in the bands below 6 GHz.

The processor supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4x memory, UFS storage, and displays of up to 2,520 x 1,080 pixels with up to 120Hz refresh rate. In turn, the SoC has the APU (AI Processing Unit or Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit) 3.0, which, according to MediaTek, offers 300% more performance than its direct competitors. It provides more powerful AI-camera capabilities so users can capture stunning images and videos at the same time, without any quality loss.

As for photography, MediaTek’s Imagiq 5.0 – HDR-native image signal processor (ISP) – handles cameras up to a total of 80 megapixels, supports 4K shots at 30 and 60 fps. The MiraVision handles 120 Hz image refresh and HDR10+ display.

Its HyperEngine 2.0 gaming technology should be able to provide better gaming performance. It delivers a superb gaming experience with optimizations that reduce network latency for smoother gameplay, support faster response times, and enhance display quality. MediaTek calculates that single-core performance is 7% higher than the Snapdragon 765G in the category.

But the main bet of the MediaTek Dimensity 820 is on 5G. According to MediaTek, the chip has the world’s most advanced 5G network management. The processing unit integrates a 5G NR modem with support for 5G NSA and SA in sub-6GHz, dual SIM, dual standby (DSDS) 5G technology, and Voice over New Radio (VoNR) services on both SIMs.
