Recent research led by the University of Bristol has developed a smartwatch-based system designed to help individuals quit smoking. The system uses passive monitoring to detect smoking behaviors and provides real-time support to maintain smoke-free living. In this feasibility study, the researchers created software that utilized the smartwatch’s motion sensor to identify unique hand movements associated with smoking. When a lapse in smoking was detected, the smartwatch sent a timely reminder to help the individual stay on track with their abstinence goals.
