In a new study, scientists combined strategies to deliver energy-disrupting gene therapy using nanoparticles manufactured to focus only on cancer cells. Experiments showed that this targeted therapy is effective in shrinking glioblastoma brain tumors and aggressive breast cancer tumors in mice. The research team successfully tackled a major challenge by breaking up structures within the cellular energy centers known as mitochondria. They employed a technique that induces light-activated electrical currents inside the cells, naming the technology mLumiOpto.
