Volkswagen and its battery division, PowerCo, have unveiled the production-ready unified cell, a key component in the group’s strategy to standardize EV batteries. This prismatic cell, boasting a 10% increase in energy density, will debut in upcoming small electric cars like the VW ID. Polo, aiming for a 450 km range and sub-25-minute charging times.
This move, which includes producing cathode materials in Europe, is a significant step towards localizing the battery supply chain. Furthermore, the company, in partnership with QuantumScape, is actively developing solid-state batteries, with a goal of serial use by the end of the decade, signaling a serious commitment to this next-generation technology.
