In a significant achievement, MIT physicists have created a completely new and durable state of magnetism in a material using solely light. The researchers stimulated the atoms in an antiferromagnetic material with photons emitted from a terahertz laser-oscillating more than a trillion times a second. The laser’s oscillations are tuned with an eye to matching the natural vibrations among the material atoms, thus slightly shifting with time the “balance” of atomic spins to a new magnetic state.
