Linksys’ WiFi router can detect the intruder and send a notification

Security cameras and motion sensors are entering more and more homes to improve our security. Now, a manufacturer has managed to turn its router into a motion sensor using WiFi.

Linksys has created a service called Linksys Aware, which uses the mesh WiFi network to detect movement all without cameras, motion sensors, or any additional device beyond the router or repeaters.

After activating the system, the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi application will notify us if it has detected any movement at home. Not only can the user activate, deactivate, and dormouse alarms, but also set the sensitivity to avoid false alarms.

All the movements that occur in our house and that the routers detect will be stored in the cloud for 60 days and can be viewed through the app in hourly, daily, and weekly increments.

The only router compatible with the function is the Linksys Velop Intelligent Mesh WiFi System AC2200. In the future, it will reach other Linksys mesh routers as well, and who knows if other manufacturers decide to copy the function.

The Linksys Smart WiFi App is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. In addition to quite expensive devices – Velop Tri-Band AC2200, you still need to pay a subscription for such a service, which will cost $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year. Users, however, have 90 days of free tests, during which they can check whether the system actually works as advertised by its manufacturer. The subscription service is already available in many countries.
