JBD red Micro-LED chips has exceeds 1 million nits of brightness

Shanghai-based Micro-LED display manufacturer Jade Bird Display (JBD) has announced that its independently developed 0.13-inch Micro-LED red light chip has achieved a brightness of 1 million nits.

Increasing the red light brightness is one of the most difficult challenges in Micro-LEDs. JBD has focused on hybrid integrated semiconductor tech and emphasized AlGaInP for red LEDs. AlGaInP is the most mature material for high-efficiency red LEDs, with an ideal band gap for red LEDs.

According to JBD, they have achieved 1 million nits brightness of the red light with the help of multiple technique breakthroughs, including advanced epitaxial material growth technology, non-radiative recombination suppression technology, and beam shaping technology.

Next-generation ultra-thin AlGaInP epitaxy and superior passivation technology are the keys to enhancing the brightness of red Micro-LEDs. JBD’s red Micro-LED pixel size is only 4um while the emitter size is less than 2um, thus posing a significant performance challenge.

The advancement in epitaxy significantly reduced the effects of non-radiative recombination on the surface of Micro-LED, slowing down the efficiency degradation below 5um emitter size. Combined with excellent passivation with new materials and processes, the finalized design further breaks through the size effect barrier and significantly boosts internal quantum efficiency.

JBD has also significantly advanced pixel optics and is crucial in brightness engineering. The new structure increases light extraction efficiency through an enhanced transmission film system. Further, it optimizes the micro-lens structure to improve small-angle beam collimation efficiency and brightness level significantly. As a result, JBD has achieved product-level million-nit red light panels under usual driving conditions.

In 2021, the brightness of red light reached 300,000 nits for the first time; in 2022, it exceeded 500,000 nits; in February 2023, it was raised again to 750,000 nits, paving the way for the mass production of the Hummingbird full-color light engine; in 2023 In September, it officially exceeded the 1 million nit mark.

The advances in red light technology have brought the application potential of the JBD Hummingbird X-cube color-combining light engine to a level. Hummingbird features an ultra-compact 0.4 cc size, 1 g weight, and low power consumption of 200 mW. The Hummingbird has distinguished advantages for consumer AR displays.

Previously, JBD has achieved Micro-LED blue light brightness of 1 million nits and green light brightness of 5 million nits. The newest red display can boost the Hummingbird output flux from 3-4 lm to over 5 lm, reaching an ultra-high 12.5 lm/cc luminous efficiency.

The 1 million nits red breakthrough proves JBD’s leadership in the Micro-LED industry and validates its AlGaInP red LED approach. JBD will launch its mass-produced Hummingbird optical engines to boost the consumer AR glasses market.

Many new products based on this solution will be launched soon, and more information will be disclosed by then.
