Volvo includes a 180 km/h speed limit to all its new cars

Volvo has started implementing a new 112 mph (180 km/h) speed limit on all of its new cars, highlighting the Swedish automaker’s position as the world leader in road safety. Yes, even sports cars will be limited by this measure announced in March 2019 and which comes into force with manufacturers.

If most motorists respect the limitations in force, those who wish to “have fun” or go on a circuit will certainly have trouble swallowing this decision.

In addition to the speed limit, each Volvo car will now also come with a Care Key, which allows Volvo drivers to set additional limitations on the car’s top speed. This can be very useful when a young family member or an inexperienced driver is about to drive.

The new speed limit should not cause any problems or inconvenience, 112 mph is a very high speed, and the reality is that there are very few places where you can go at that or higher speeds without having problems with the law.

There may be a question of not being able to fully exploit the potential of a product you own, but Volvo argues that limiting cars to 112 mph represents a decision made to lessen the risks of speeding accidents.

We believe that a carmaker has a responsibility to help improve traffic safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre in a statement. “Our speed-limiting technology, and the dialogue that is initiated, fit that thinking. The speed cap and Care Key help people reflect and realize that speeding is dangerous, while also providing extra peace of mind and supporting better driver behavior.”
