VanMoof launches S3 and X3, affordable e-bikes with upgraded tech

The Dutch bike-meets-smart-tech company, VanMoof, has presented two new, smart pedelecs, whose price is 60% lower than the previous model. The VanMoof S3 and X3 are improved versions of the predecessors Electrified S2 and X2.

The S3 looks more elegant; the smaller X3 is more compact and certainly not the worse choice for driving in the city. If the general design has not changed compared to the previous model, this new version brings several technical evolutions which improve performance, driving pleasure, and correct some faults.

Thus, the electric motor, housed in the front hub, is more compact and lighter while delivering twice as much torque at equal power: 59 Nm for 250W (EU) or 350W (US). At the push of a button, 350 watts can be mobilized for a short time. According to the manufacturer, the engine was quieter and smaller than its predecessors. Since these are pedelecs, they only accelerate electrically to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) with pedal assistance.

The batteries of the VanMoof S3 and X3 are, as always, integrated into the frame of this manufacturer and have a capacity of 504-watt hours. The battery offers 60 to 150 km (37 to 93 miles) of autonomy and can be charged in half in 80 minutes, while full charging takes four hours. One disadvantage: the power storage devices cannot be removed from the frame for easier charging.

VanMoof has also completely redesigned the transmission, which goes from two to four gears that changes automatically. There is the famous button “Turbo Boost” on the handlebars, which allows you to directly activate an electric assistance booster to swallow a climb more easily. The adoption of hydraulic disc brakes guarantees more effective and enduring braking than the mechanical disc brakes of the X2.

VanMoof S3 and X3 are also integrated with all the high-tech features such as theft protection and smartphone connection. With the associated app, the vehicle can not only be located but also unlocked and locked. To activate the anti-theft system, just press your toes on the button located just next to the rear wheel axle, which will physically block the bike and activate an electronic lock, and the alarm will activate if someone is trying to move it. The front and rear lights are built into the frame.

As with the previous generation, both models differ in size. The Electrified S3 with 28-inch rims is built for people with a body size between 1.70 and 2.10 meters, the X3 with 24-inch rims should be sufficient for people who are between 1.55 and 2 meters tall. Both bicycles weigh 19 kilograms.

According to VanMoof, the most important change is the price. The S2 and X2 had a price of $3,398, while the S3 and X3 will cost US$1,998, with shipping expected to start next month.
