The Screecher, a solar power-assisted four-wheeled pedal cycle

Solar-fueled transportation takes a big step forward. The Screecher is the newest four-wheeled electric bike to hit production, but unlike most others, this one offers some interesting features that we have never seen before.

Developed by Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based startup Sunox, the Screecher is an environmentally friendly, solar power-assisted pedal cycle that accelerates from zero to 15 mph in five seconds. Compared to conventional pedelecs, this model has four wheels and a curved solar canopy that protects the rider from all kinds of weather.

The Screecher is propelled in multiple different ways: pedaling, by two electric motors installed in the rear wheels, or a combination of both. In the latter instance, the amount of motor assistance is user selectable. The two electric motors deliver 350 W continuous and 500 W peak power. This unusual e-bike is produced in the USA, but thanks to its top speed of 25 km/h, it can also be used as a pedelec in Germany. This is also supported by the fact that the track width of the e-bike allows riding on cycle paths.

The 618 Wh lithium-ion battery can be removed and enables a range of up to 32 km (20 miles) in normal riding conditions on a single charge without pedaling or up to 56 km (35 miles) with pedal assistance. Depending on a number of variables, the terrain, the amount of sunshine, or your riding style, the range of The Screecher varies. If the battery runs completely empty, solar power from the roof panels can charge it in six hours or plug it in for hours.

The 64kg e-bike includes a solar roof with 100 W, and an optional solar panel can also be installed above the rear trunk to increase the charging speed. You won’t find a chain to the rear wheels because the Screecher is driven by the front wheels and also offers an all-wheel-drive if required.

In addition, it can be easily transported in another vehicle since the roof canopy can be removed and the Screecher folded in half for between-ride transport.

Finally, the price has been determined with the objective of being able to reduce it as its demand in the market grows. That is why Sunox has decided to market the Screecher at a cost to the consumer of $4,495 per unit, with worldwide shipping.
