Candela C-8 electric hydrofoil boat flies above water for the first time

A Swedish electric boat manufacturer Candela quickly became one of the top names in electric boating after the launch of the world’s first electric hydrofoil boat in 2018. In 2020, the Candela C-7 became the best-selling electric boat on the European market and won numerous awards, and now the new C-8 is gearing up to take that performance even further.

The company has announced that its upcoming Candela C-8 takes its maiden voyage before serial production begins later this year. The C-8 promises to revolutionize waterborne transport, thanks to its unique combination of long all-electric range, high speed, and industry-first features.

Candela’s electric hydrofoil system reduces water friction by 80% compared to a planing boat and makes for a completely different – and better – ride. The 8.5-meter-long (28-foot) vessel can hit an impressive speed of 30 knots (55.6 km/h) thanks to that extreme drag reduction. Cruising at 20 knots (37 km/h), the C-8 can fly for 50 nautical miles (92.6 km) on its 44 kWh battery. According to the company, the achieved range is about four times longer than the best electric boats currently on the market.

The craft’s lightweight carbon fiber hull was inspired by aircraft design, and its electric hydrofoil system, automatically controlled, ensures a stable, pleasant ride and maximum efficiency. Its C-POD motor, which provides 550 kW (67 hp) in a small unit, is the most efficient and longest-lasting boat motor ever built, without maintenance.

The comfortable interior sleeps a small family and provides a retreat from the sun on warm days on the water. The C-8 also comes with an Autopilot feature; the fly-by-wire steering system will follow a set course for you hands-free.

The Candela C-8 electric boat can also be further customized. It is available for pre-order with the price starting at €290,000 (US$330,000) and is now even closer to the serial production.
