Zooplankton do not clean water

They play limited role in cleaning contaminated water

Researchers at The University of Texas at El Paso and Stanford University made a surprising discovery about zooplankton, the tiny aquatic creatures known for feeding on bacteria. Contrary to expectations, these creatures do not effectively clean water contaminated with fecal microorganisms. This finding sheds light on the limitations of using zooplankton to treat water bodies contaminated with fecal organisms. Considering that over 50% of rivers, bays, and estuaries in the U.S. were found to be unsafe for at least one use due to fecal contamination, this research has significant implications for water quality management.
