Lamotrigine, commonly used for epilepsy and mood disorders, has shown promise as a treatment for non-dystrophic myotonia, a rare muscle disease. In a trial conducted by UCL, researchers compared lamotrigine with mexiletine in 60 adults, finding both reduced muscle stiffness similarly. Lamotrigine emerged as a viable alternative due to fewer side effects, affordability, and safety in pregnancy.
