Prolong mask-wearing could increase vulnerability to pathogens

Could also lead to hindrance in hydration

A group of researchers studied 30 female volunteers with sensitive facial skin to external stimuli and detailed the concerns that masks pose to facial skin. The study noticed that compromised skin barriers increase transepidermal water loss, which could lead to inflammation, hindrance in hydration, and even an increase in vulnerability to pathogens. Prolonged use of masks has been shown to disrupt the normal physiological profile by significantly reducing bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms’ diversity. This diversity is vital in protecting against pathogens.
