UC Irvine-led research has shown that the optical properties of materials can be significantly enhanced by manipulating the momentum of incoming photons. This breakthrough could have a major impact on solar energy conversion and optoelectronics. For example, the optical properties of pure silicon, a crucial semiconductor, could be improved by an impressive four orders of magnitude.
