Three years after the bulk carrier MV Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef off Mauritius, spilling 1,000 tonnes of a new type of marine fuel oil, alarming research led by Curtin University has revealed that this oil continues to linger in a vital mangrove forest near key Ramsar conservation sites. Dr. Alan Scarlett, the lead researcher from Curtin’s WA Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Centre, emphasized that the chemical ‘fingerprint’ of the oil found in the mangrove sediments perfectly matches the Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO).
Oil is still present in an environmentally sensitive mangrove forest
