It solves a 50- year-old mystery.

Researchers from NHS Blood and Transplant (Bristol), NHSBT’s International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL) and the University of Bristol have discovered a new blood group system – MAL. The inherited AnWj-negative blood group phenotype is caused by homozygosity for deletion in MAL, encoding Myelin and lymphocyte protein.
