NASA’s JUNO captured a unique, elongated thermal emission feature

Lava channel thermal emissions at Zal Patera.

On December 30, 2023, NASA’s Juno spacecraft made a special observation using its Stellar Reference Unit (SRU). The SRU spotted a long, curvy heat signature that stretches about 40 miles (65 kilometers) across, along with a shorter, straight heat feature nearby, to the west of a place called South Zal Mons. The image was captured with an incredibly detailed resolution of 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) per pixel, which means scientists can see the features clearly and study them in great detail.
