Moon’s remelting: A wrinkle to mystery of Moon’s true age

The moon underwent a ‘remelting’ 4.35 billion years ago.

A new study by UC Santa Cruz Professor Francis Nimmo and colleagues suggests a possible explanation for the Moon’s age discrepancy. They propose that around 4.35 billion years ago, the Moon experienced a “remelting” event caused by Earth’s tidal pull, which triggered significant geological activity and intense heating. This remelting could have “reset” the age of the Moon’s rocks, effectively obscuring its true age, similar to a volcanic facelift.
