Mitochondria not only produce energy but also do something unexpected

Scientists at the University of Freiburg’s Faculty of Medicine found that when mitochondrial energy production abruptly halts, it blocks normal cell death (apoptosis) and instead initiates an inflammatory response. This discovery suggests that mitochondria play a key role in deciding whether a cell undergoes a controlled, silent apoptosis or releases pro-inflammatory substances.
