Until now, the role of magnetic fields during galaxy mergers and star formation was only theoretical. However, an international team of scientists led by Dr. David Clements of Imperial College London has made a groundbreaking discovery. They have found evidence of magnetic fields linked to a disc of gas and dust, several hundred light-years across, within the system of two merging galaxies called Arp220.
