A study conducted by researchers from the Marche Polytechnic University and University of South Australia found that while domestic vertical garden appliances can offer fresh, locally grown produce under controlled conditions with zero food miles, they do consume a significant amount of energy. The study revealed that artificial lighting, which is essential for plant growth, contributed to over 50% of the total energy costs in growing a crop of red lettuce. This percentage is five times higher than that of professional vertical farming setups.
