Giraffes do not traverse slopes

They struggle with slopes.

New research shows that giraffes prefer flat ground and avoid slopes steeper than 20°. This limits the areas they can access, both inside and outside protected reserves. A study that tracked the movements of 33 giraffes with GPS collars in South Africa found that giraffes steer clear of steep terrain. They likely struggle with slopes over 20° because of the energy needed to move and the risk of falling.
