The first high-resolution view of the entire solar disk

ESA’s Solar Orbiter.

The Sun is the most dynamic and complex object in our Solar System. To study it more closely, the ESA launched the Solar Orbiter spacecraft in February 2020, equipped with six scientific instruments. The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research contributed hardware for four of these instruments. Two key instruments include the EUI, which captures the Sun’s short-wave ultraviolet radiation from the corona, and the PHI double telescope, which observes the photosphere to provide insights into the Sun’s magnetic field strength and solar plasma velocity.
