Astronomers from the University of California, Berkeley, have discovered large, Earth-sized spots at Jupiter’s north and south poles, similar in size to the Great Red Spot, but these appear and disappear seemingly at random. These ovals, visible only in ultraviolet wavelengths, are found within layers of stratospheric haze that cover the planet’s poles. When they do appear, the dark ovals are typically located just below the bright auroral zones at each pole.
