The renewable energy sector depends on rare earth elements, highlighting the need for resource development. This study estimates coal ash resources and the potential for extracting rare earth elements in the US. Data from federal databases and literature show that 52 gigatons of coal were produced (1950–2021), with power plants being the main consumers since 1980. The national coal ash supply contains enough rare earth elements to significantly bolster the national supply without any new mining.
