Researchers have developed a continuously replicating model of lip cells from donated lip tissue. These indefinitely growing cell lines enable the creation of 3D models, advancing lip biology research and aiding in testing treatments for conditions like cleft lips.
Researchers obtained skin cells from two patients—one with a lip laceration and another with a cleft lip—to create continuously replicating lip cell lines. They used a retroviral vector to deactivate a gene that restricts cell lifespan and modified telomeres to improve longevity.
