A bizarre particle with direction-dependent mass

Massless in one direction, massive in another.

For the first time, scientists have observed semi-Dirac fermions in a crystal called ZrSiS. They were surprised to find that these particles gained mass when moving in one direction. The discovery was accidental, as the scientists weren’t initially looking for these particles but noticed unusual behavior that led them to identify these particles, which can sometimes act massless and sometimes have mass.
