Engineered Arts, a UK-based robotics company, has unveiled a humanoid robot that can display human-like expressions with the most accuracy. Named Ameca, it is the world’s most advanced human-shaped robot representing the forefront of human-robotics technology.
Engineered Arts has showcased the robot through a YouTube video where the new humanoid robot was seen changing facial expressions in a fascinating yet eerie way. The video shows the grey-faced robot suddenly coming alive with human-like facial expressions, such as distorting its face into a grimace of shock and examining its hands in disbelief. The robot even seems like a CGI at one point when it smiles looking at the camera.
Ameca has smooth, lifelike motion and advanced facial expression capabilities mean it can strike an instant rapport with anybody. It is the perfect platform to develop interaction between us humans and any metaverse or digital realm. The humanoid robot can be easily upgraded as both its hardware and software are modular. Each module can function independently, meaning you don’t need a fully assembled robot and can only use its head or even a single arm.
While Ameca is impressive at conveying emotions via facial expressions, it’s unable to walk yet. However, the company assured that the research is underway to make a walking robot. The robot is meant to allow us to study human-robot interaction and believable facial cues make that a whole lot easier.
The company says the humanoid robot will be brought to the public at the CES 2022 event, which is to be held in January in Las Vegas.
